What to Expect from Writing 105

Image
Throughout this crazy COVID year, I have learned much more than what you would expect from a writing course. Not only did I learn many different writing skills throughout my time with Ms. Schilly, I learned how important relationships and being face to face with someone can be. Being someone who stayed remote throughout most of this 2020-21 school year, it was hard seeing my friends get to laugh and be involved with their teachers and classmates. Being a senior during a global pandemic was difficult, but I learned that you just have to take every day with a grain of salt. You never know what is going to happen next and you just have to savor every moment.      Secondly, I learned a lot about different the world around me throughout this class. I loved getting to read about toxic masculinity  and watching the film "Tough Guise". Going into this class, I thought it would be a typical English class with old readings and outdated ideas. But...

The Changing Ways of Normal

Image
In the film, Little Miss Sunshine,  Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, a team of American film and music video directors, explore the ideas of beauty standards and what it means to be a winner or a loser. In the film, 7 year old Olive Hoover wants to compete in the Little Miss Sunshine beauty pageant. With her over worked mother, gay uncle who was just released from the psych ward, type A father, a brother who took a vow of silence, and a drug addicted grandfather, they take a trip to California for the pageant. With family tensions high, the Hoover family goes through obstacles like their van breaking down, the father yelling at everyone, and the grandfather overdosing.      Throughout the movie, there are many different norms that are tested. When the Hoover family was out to lunch on their trip, and Olive wanted to order ice cream, her father tried to tell her that you need to be skinny to be a beauty pageant. Throughout the movie, the idea of ...

The Right Way to Have a Fight

Is there a right and wrong way to fight with someone? I never thought that there could be a wrong way in which you argue. Taking a look at the article, by  Gary Hatch, “Arguing in Communities,” Hatch discusses the ways of having a responsible argument. Hatch, an associate professor of rhetoric and composition, explains that living with difference is not a bad solution. People nowadays don't understand that being different is a good thing. If everyone was the same, the world would be a boring place. Differences give individuals their identity in society. Learn to live with differences and agree to disagree.     Another factor Hatch talks about how no one person has lived the same way another person has. You are basing your arguments on what you have experienced. You're experiences are going to be different than any other persons. It can be difficult to have to defend your own experiences when arguing, you may feel attacked. But learning to live w...

The Norms and Single Stories of Op-Docs

When you view things in life, it can be hard to suspend your judgement. Think about it, when you think about anything in life, your opinion is always there, you always end up thinking things before you get to know what it is about. Taking a look at two different New York Times Op-Docs, I had to suspend my judgement and try to view these Op-Docs in a different light. One of the videos I viewed was titled, "Tears Teacher" by Noemie Nakai. Noemie Nakai is an actor, writer, and director and her Op-Doc covers this teacher that hosts therapy sessions for people who need to cry; especially men. Not only in Japan, where this takes place, but all over the world, men are told they can't cry or they aren't a true man. Men are taught to hide and push away their emotions in order to look manly. This teacher in Japan is trying to break this stereotype and teach men, and even some women, that it is okay to show emotions and that it is healthy to do so. It really made me think...

The Changing Ways of Toxic Masculinity

In the modern world today, men and the stigma around men showing emotions and being feminine are finally starting to change; I think. In viewing the documentary, Tough Guise 2 , Jackson Kratz, an anti-violence educator, brings to light the ideas that men are violent because of the world around them. Movies, video games, mental illness, all causing men to react to things in violent ways. Kratz gives examples like the Sandy Hook school shooting, bar fights, and bombings. But why is it that only men seem to have these violent outbursts, when women too live with similar circumstances. Society tells men that in order to be manly, you have to use violence to prove it. Kratz mentions that men are told not to adapt to the change of showing your emotions and being feminine because femininity equals weakness.              Similar to this, in the New York Times article, by Michael Ian Black, "The Boys are Not All Right," Black also poin...

10 Ways To Have a Better Conversation

I haven't thought much about what goes into having a conversation with someone, it just happens. I mean, it's the same thing as a text message, do you really think about what makes a good conversation with someone? In her TedTalk, Celeste Headlee discusses the 10 rules to have a better conversation and to be a better listener. She said a lot of things that stood out to me and made me think about how I should apply them to my own life. One thing she said was to enter every conversation like you have something to learn. Usually that isn't something you would like about going to talk to your best friend or family member, but if you really took the time to listen and learn, you would take something out of each and every conversation. Another flash point that stood out to me was that everybody is an expert in something. You shouldn't go into something thinking you already know everything there is to possibly know about something. You always can learn something from so...
