The Norms and Single Stories of Op-Docs

When you view things in life, it can be hard to suspend your judgement. Think about it, when you think about anything in life, your opinion is always there, you always end up thinking things before you get to know what it is about. Taking a look at two different New York Times Op-Docs, I had to suspend my judgement and try to view these Op-Docs in a different light. One of the videos I viewed was titled, "Tears Teacher" by Noemie Nakai. Noemie Nakai is an actor, writer, and director and her Op-Doc covers this teacher that hosts therapy sessions for people who need to cry; especially men. Not only in Japan, where this takes place, but all over the world, men are told they can't cry or they aren't a true man. Men are taught to hide and push away their emotions in order to look manly. This teacher in Japan is trying to break this stereotype and teach men, and even some women, that it is okay to show emotions and that it is healthy to do so. It really made me think...

What to Expect from Writing 105

Throughout this crazy COVID year, I have learned much more than what you would expect from a writing course. Not only did I learn many different writing skills throughout my time with Ms. Schilly, I learned how important relationships and being face to face with someone can be. Being someone who stayed remote throughout most of this 2020-21 school year, it was hard seeing my friends get to laugh and be involved with their teachers and classmates. Being a senior during a global pandemic was difficult, but I learned that you just have to take every day with a grain of salt. You never know what is going to happen next and you just have to savor every moment. Secondly, I learned a lot about different the world around me throughout this class. I loved getting to read about toxic masculinity and watching the film "Tough Guise". Going into this class, I thought it would be a typical English class with old readings and outdated ideas. But...

The Right Way to Have a Fight

Is there a right and wrong way to fight with someone? I never thought that there could be a wrong way in which you argue. Taking a look at the article, by Gary Hatch, “Arguing in Communities,” Hatch discusses the ways of having a responsible argument. Hatch, an associate professor of rhetoric and composition, explains that living with difference is not a bad solution. People nowadays don't understand that being different is a good thing. If everyone was the same, the world would be a boring place. Differences give individuals their identity in society. Learn to live with differences and agree to disagree. Another factor Hatch talks about how no one person has lived the same way another person has. You are basing your arguments on what you have experienced.
